Paint Container Disposal Service

Containers are often the biggest part of a paint waste pile. Tins and drums that still hold residue cannot simply go in the metal recycling skip, and part-full containers need to be packed so they do not leak in transit.

We collect existing paint containers of all sizes. If you also need new drums or a regular container swap, see Containers And Exchange, where we cover supply and exchange separately.

Who We Collect From

  • Decorators and contractors clearing stores
  • Manufacturers with used raw-material drums
  • Distributors and paint retailers
  • Facilities teams on refurbishment projects
  • Sites closing down or relocating

Before We Collect

  • Group containers by size and whether they are full, part-full or empty.
  • Make sure lids, bungs and caps are secure.
  • Point out any damaged, rusted or leaking containers.

Why Used Paint Tins And Containers Must Be Disposed Of Professionally

Used tins, drums and IBCs often hold residues, so whether they count as hazardous depends on what they held and how much is left.

This page covers disposing of existing containers. To arrange supply or exchange of new containers, see Containers And Exchange.

  1. 01Residues of solvent based paint can make containers hazardous.
  2. 02Part-filled tins still count as paint waste.
  3. 03Damaged or leaking containers need safe handling.
  4. 04Containers should be kept closed and upright for transport.
  5. 05Classification depends on previous contents.
  6. 06Your duty of care applies to empty containers too.

Recycling

Can You Recycle Paint Container?

Yes, where they are empty and dry. Metal tins are widely recycled once residues are removed, and many plastic containers can be recycled too. Containers still holding paint are dealt with as paint waste first. We can advise on the condition needed for each route.
